White Washed Dresser Re-do

I’m so excited to be sharing furniture make-overs with you again! It’s been a while. I recently refinished a dresser set with a beautiful minty color called Larchmere by Sherwin Williams. I love combining this color with a white washed effect because it’s vibrant enough that the white washing doesn’t wash out the entire color.
Now for those of you who freak out whenever they see painted furniture - let me just say that this dresser would have without a doubt ended up at the dump. The veneer was a mess, it smelled, most of the drawers were missing bottoms, backs or railings or all three.

Have you ever been to the dump? You'd be amazed at how many piece of furniture you will see there. It always makes me a little sad when I'm sitting there, waiting for my husband to unload the truck and I see the huge tractor come and smash a piece of furniture into pieces. I'd much rather see it get brought back to life with a new coat of paint!
I originally considered throwing the top away. It was in terrible condition - and I don't know many people who use hutches like this in their decor, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. As I said before - I have a hard time seeing furniture go to the dump. I ended up replacing the mirror in the back with cork board covered in linen fabric. Partially because I envisioned this dresser ending up in a young girls room, and I thought having a cork board to put photos of friends, crushes etc on instead of a boring old mirror would be a plus!
This is what the dresser looked like. I had already sanded down the top, filled in the gaps and removed the hardware, but you can see how gross the old finish was and how dated it looked.

When using chalk paint, do you sand between coats? How do you get it too look so, perfect? Almost velvety. I tried one side table, ended up junking it, but I tried to make my own chalk paint, next time Anne Sloan I guess.
