Distressed Wood Master Bedroom Makeover
This master bedroom was an awesome size 20' x 20' but it was terribly outdated with old light fixtures, doors that needed to be painted, and a wood beam ceiling that felt very dark and heavy, like it was weighing the room down. Read on to see the process we used to completely transform this whole space for around $200!

The first thing done in the space was easy. Painting all three doors white and then buying and installing some new wall sconces.

The next step in the process was a big one....tackling the ceiling. We initially tried just painting it a soft white with a very slight gray undertone. We didn't like the way that looked. After some thought, we decided to distress the wood. Not at all easy on a ceiling but for sure worth the sweat equity! After some trial and error, we figured out the steps that worked best for this wood. We would paint a section of the ceiling solid and then go back over that section with a spray bottle of water and then follow up with scraping that section. We used putty knives, crowbars, screwdrivers and about anything else you can think of to distress the wood. If we did't like something, we would just add some paint, water it down and try again. The natural oil of the wood started coming through when we sprayed the water on, which added some aged look to the wood.

After we got a good size section completed, we decided it looked too busy having the beams and the flat planks of the ceiling distressed so we went back and painted the planks in between the beams solid.

When the ceiling was done, which took a full weekend to do, it was time to paint the walls. We decided to go with a soft gray to tie in with the color scheme of the rest of the house.

Now it was just a matter of putting things back in place and after two very long weekends of hard work and sweat equity....the master bedroom was completely transformed!

The master suite no longer feels outdated and the ceiling no longer feel like it's weighing the room down. This is a great treatment, but there is a lot of manual labor involved but it's well worth the effort.
