Curtain rods made from galvanized plumbing parts...a tutorial

I'm definitely not the first to make these, and after this tutorial, I'm hoping there will be some of you who will also tackle this DIY project. There were a few things I learned along the way, so you can learn from my mistakes!

@ Missi...you'll have to let me know when you get it done! @ Ally...yes, it is seriously called a pipe nipple and I seriously felt uncomfortable having to type it.

Great job Tricia. And Ally, there are loads of names like that in hardware supplies.

When we first moved in our home, almost nine years ago now, I had the dilemma of finding the right hardware for our row of five windows placed close together in our sunroom so I came up with the idea (I'm sure someone else had done it even before that and I'd probably seen it and had it in the back of my mind) to use PVC pipe and fittings. After seeing my hubby use so much of it when ...»

installing our drainage plumbing that it was fresh in my mind. Even though I spray painted with an antique gold to match our chandeliers faux finish I wish I had used stained wood closet dowels in place of the pipe for a richer look.

    • I'm ashamed to say, but I've yet to make the curtains which will be buttoned back tabs to fit over and around the "rods" and fitting brackets.
    • Gosh I have to take new pictures. They all are old. We've accomplished so much since these were taken.

Tricia, I worked for a supply company and remember becoming familiar with the pipe nipples and the couplers with male and female ends. It came as a bit of a shock to me at the time, but once understanding the reasons for the terminology and dealing w/it on a daily basis, the shock factor vanished. Using galvanized fittings works great, but sometimes dressing it up w/copper gives it an entirely different wow factor.

I grew up around those terms so it never really had that shock factor.

VERY NICE. About 5 years ago, I did the same thing in my family room because I couldn't find curtain rods in the length I needed them in to place on my 4 window openings. By the way, I painted the rods (pipes) in black to go with my color combination of the room.
