DIY "Forever" Dryer Sheets

$5

These DIY dryer sheets go in the success column! My clothes came out of the dryer smelling fresh, feeling soft and without that annoying static cling I hate so much. This definitely WASN'T one of those Pinterest promises that fails to deliver!
Liquid Fabric Softener

Water

Plastic storage bin with lid

6 sponges, cut in half lengthwise
Store the sponges in the liquid mixture and when you're ready to add a load to the dryer, just pull one out, squeeze out the excess liquid and toss it in the dryer with your clothes! When the load is done, just put it back into the container for next time! http://www.365ishpins.com/diy-dryer-sheets-vol-2-day-49/

I tried this but after a few weeks my softener started smelling sour. What am I doing wrong?

Would it work better if you were to use as much as needed per load and prevent the rancid / sour smell?

I use old washcloths in the same manner.

Try making the mixture, soaking the rags or sponges, then putting them in seperate zip lock bags and place them in the freezer. On wash day pull out two or three and they will be fresh for those loads! The natural bacteria in water and any picked up from the "clean" clothes would spoil the mixture!. Also try washing the sponges and cloths before resoaking them.
