Use old doors to DIY a rustic and eclectic coffee table.

I recently found two old doors in a construction dumpster on the side of the road. After doing a bit of prep work with the old paint (including scraping and sanding for days and days) I decided on a coffee table design that was so easy to assemble. The only power tool I used was an electric drill. I was able to use parts from both of the doors for all of the wood parts of the coffee table and keep as much of the rusty old hardware on as possible. I added casters to the coffee table to make it easy to maneuver. You know when someone wants to clean in here. I'm not sure who that person is, but I thought I was being very thoughtful with the caster decision. :) #ProudestDIY

that would make a great kitchen island, close it in, add some shelves, some corbels, bead board, build in wine rack on one side and recipe book shelf on the other.....whew, wish I had some old doors now.

That might be a little too rustic for me. Put some wheel covers on the wheels at least. And take those door knobs off and use them as handles to make drawers. Sand those down some. I wouldn't want paint chips on the floor. (remember that old paint had lead in it)

You could also take those old doors and make an Armoire of them, or a desk, end tables, or use them as walls to a home in a basement maybe. I like the idea of re purposing things. in my day we called it recycling, I guess that word isn't up to date with our times now.

Lynn L - it's great to hear how your style is so different, so fun that we can all create exactly what we love with old things!! The knob is one of our favorite parts of the coffee table, and you can read all about prep here (http://www.thespacebetweenblog.net/2012/08/17/restoring-old-wood-scrape-strip-and-sand/), no flaking paint on our new favorite piece. :)

Love this, however, I had one and needed to get rid of it. The wood started to spread and crumb, etc started getting the openings. Sad. For future info, does anyone know oh a way to keep this warping from happening? Thanks <3

Great table. Especially if you love shabby-schiek as I do and repurposed is best of all.

Gina! That's a bummer about your project. When you say the wood started to 'crumb' ... was it particle board?

What did you do to fill the hole where the door knob was?

Angie Owen - I kept the door knobs on the door! The door crack in the second picture here is still on the door on the bottom shelf, you can see more pics of it at this link ... http://thespacebetweenblog.net/2012/08/24/ol....
