Metalic wallpaper

I replaced a vanity for a client last week. This was in a student rental and the old cabinet was on its last legs. Understandably so since it was original to the apartment...I'm guessing early 70's by what was behind.

She was wondering why the walls had this funky texture job...when the wall paper was removed it took some the drywall paper with it...they took a short cut and did a splatter knock down.

I brought this scrap home to show my girls...they actually loved it...sorry I not going to remodel your bath in paisley and aluminum foil.

That's actually not too bad....but I wish you could have seen the Gold flocked and foil that was in the spare room here when I moved in...LOL

Though I agree with your girls that it's pretty, I'm with you on not doing their bathroom. LOL I hate wallpaper on walls. Well on my walls anyway. It's pretty, just bear to removed. I'm guessing that's why Becky H commented the way she did. Right Becky? Been there?

I have fought the battle with wallpaper over and over. It was so much "the thing" for a while, but it gets dingy and dirty, and starts to peal as it dries out. I will never have it again! I keep seeing it on the home shows but know it is a "no, no" for me...and the patterns are shocking...look great on TV but would be over powering in a home!

Good Lord Becky, when I moved into our home, every single wall was wallpapered in some of the most horrible paper. We had "string" paper in the common areas, except for the dinnette, where they'd hung cork paper. The rest of the house was done in very large geometrics or florals with the dominant color being chartreuse. In the master bedroom it was chartreuse, black and white mums; other bedroom was chartreuse, yellow, gold and white geometrics with a repeat of 15". One bathroom was ...»
gold, brown and foil. It took me years to get rid of and paint all the walls in this house.............note: I work alone. Here in Fla. one must be very careful with wallpaper, as mold can grow behind it. (I found all sorts of things behind ours.) Thank you, I will stick w/paint. I feel there's nothing that can't be accomplished w/paint, and am quite happy to see those who stencil, etc. accomplishing their goals through that medium.

my goodness Becky...that's alot of wallpaper, and so tacky to boot! I'm sure it was the 'in' thing at the time and good for them they didn't have to deal with removing it :| or they wouldn't have put it up all over the place!

some day, I hope they create some kind of glue that makes wallpaper easier to take off because I like the look of it...tastefully ofcourse ;)

Oh my Becky H. I don't think I could have bought a house with that much paper. At least not in knowing what I do about removing it. I only had to remove border and I swore I'd never do any papering again. We did a wainscot in that same house using solid vinyl paper. That's suppose to strip easily. We sold it before I tired of it so I have no clue if it really was easier. I hope so since I'm sure the new owners removed it since I met her at a fabric store recently and she told me all they ...»
did to the house. Not that I wanted to hear that they replaced all our real wood trim with painted MDF! 8^O

Believe me, I ran out of steam by the time I'd done all but the master bedroom and bath. I took a 1 yr. break from it all before taking that on. Of course they'd not properly prepared the walls before wallpapering, and often I had to remove 2 layers of paper and do dry wall repair to boot. When I resumed, hubby was requested to assist, but he'd had enough. That's when I pulled the wall paper down in the water closet. It was a mess because the brown paper backing remained on the walls. ...»
I'd hoped he'd come along and give me an assist, but that didn't happen. So to encourage his cooperation, that's when I painted the Publix (grocery store) logo on the brown paper backing (while he was on a business trip). Instead of saying: Publix, where shopping is a pleasure, it read: Potty, where stopping is a pleasure. My son and I were laughing our butts off over that. The room did totally look like a brown paper bag after that!!

LOL. So did your hubby help you after your "sign" on the wall?

The sad thing is most don't take the time to prep the walls properly before papering.

My parents had this in their bathrooms - gold/green foil! Some things don't need to make a comeback!

I had a paper in my first house bathroom that was so ugly I was scared to go in there...It was frogs the size of a salad plate with Pop eyes in gold...they looked like demon frogs....I pulled that paper off and lived with discolored paper backing scraps for months....but I couldn't live with those frogs...LOL

Oh Wow - we're really taking a trip down memory lane!! How about the days of the velvet flocked paper? And the other day someone also mentioned when everybody had the black & gold heavy mediterranean furniture!! Not me I'm proud to say but I did have a really gaudy paper in my townhouse kitchen when I was first married. I vaguely recall something about huge orange flowers - eeeeeewww!!!

    @Sharron - ribbit ribbit LOL

When we bought this house it had a gold foil with that Iron trellis pattern on it in gold flocked velvet....WELLLLL I was 7 months pregnant when we moved in and I couldn't take down that wall paper....which was ultimately to be the nursery... one day I went in to see the baby looking at the wall paper and his eyes would cross everytime he focused on it....so that was the day the paper started coming off the walls....LOL

Sharron, you just needed the right incentive. ☺ @Becky, yes, after he was able to stop choking and asking what I was thinking to have done that, he did help. I think he knew I'd leave the logo up until he took it down. AND I always hated the Mediterranean furniture. Yeck!
