A Cosy Reading Nook

We added an extension to our old 24'x26' rental cottage with the aim of a future retirement spot for ourselves. Since the plan includes a lot of reading catch-up, my project the last month has been to get rid of the old couch that was partially blocking the view and get to work on the reading nook.
I made the bench 30" wide so it could also be used as a spare bed for the grandkids with one at each end. The length of the alcove is 108", and using 3/4" birch plywood I ended up with 3 useful storage bins underneath.
The ta-da moment was when I turned on the led tape lights behind the strip of horizontal wood trim across the front. The lights are perfect for evening tv watching at the other end of the room. I had this idea in mind way back when the new part was being wired so I had the electrician put in a plugin low down where the box is now, and a wall switch to control the led strip. The overhead lights are perfect for reading at either end of the bench. I made box cushions from a Fibre-Form material from the fabric store, with piped edges that are a real time consuming pain, very glad that part is over. The pillows are all covered in colors matching the carpet, a great excuse to go wild at the big fabric store sale !
At the end with the view I made a wedge shaped plywood backrest and covered it with some padding and the same fabric as the mattress cushions. With the addition of a hastily made bookshelf the place is ready for some serious winter reading.

The perils of cobbling together an existing building with new construction during our worst winter on record are documented on my building blog www.ourseasongcottage.blogspot.com
