What is the best way to clean this up and what type of paint would you use? It is an indoor 3 piece cart in my garden room that often gets wet.

I had an outdoor table that had rust on it.I just used a spray paint over it that was rust proof.I didn't sand it down, just sprayed over it.You may need to do some sanding but rust proof spray paint is the best.My table is still in great shape and didnt rust any further.

I agree. A bit of sanding to get it smooth, & use Rustoleum or something similar. I have done this, & not had rust come through if it's kept inside.I would keep the legs gold, but make a color pop for the tops!
  • You can hand scrub the rust with a baking soda and water paste to try to clean up the rust damage. If too severe, use a sander with fine grit or grinder. After removing it the best you can use an exterior oil based paint (brush or spray; spray is best finish) like Rust Oleum or similar rust inhibiting paint. Lovely cart! It will be beautiful finished up!

You need to sand it down, clean it up, and put a rust inhibitor on it to stop the corrosion. Rustoleum makes one.

Rustoleum Rust Reformer is AWESOME. "Instantly converts rust to a protected, paintable surface."

I clean rust with vinegar and a hard scruber and let it air dry and paint with rustoleum paint.

I have had great success with a light sanding, then priming with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer followed by topcoat(s) in whatever color you choose.

Buy a bottle of “Naval Jelly” in the paint department of most box stores. It’s a pink gel. Paint it on, it eats rust then wash off and let dry. Give the surface a little sanding to smooth, then use whatever rust inhibitor you prefer. I've used naval jelly on a 50’s chrome step stool. Once the rust was removed and cleaned off, I rubbed a coat of “Penetrol” (also found in paint department) over the chrome which prevents rust from coming back. Step stool looked like new when I was done.

Patti's suggestions are good. We have not gone quite as far as using the Naval Jelly; but I would recommend light sanding and Rusto-Oleum. Great stuff!

I would get Rust Dissolver and metal paint from Rustoleum to clean it up.... and once its dry and give the paint a day or two to cure, I would add a crystal clear epoxy pour on the top since it will be getting wet frequently. Michaels carriers small epoxy kits..... be sure to mix if very throughly scraping the sides of the mixing cup for at least 5 mins.
