Faux "Succulent Garden" Made With Pistachio Shells

I love the look of vertical succulent gardens, but I have the very opposite of a green thumb, and purchasing that many succulents only to have them die would be quite costly. (Yes, I can actually kill succulents.) So I crafted my very own succulent garden out of pistachio shells. I'm pretty sure I can't kill this one. :)

The "succulents" in their natural shell color.

Each "succulent" was dyed with fabric dye. I kept them in the dye at varying lengths of time to get different depths of color for each flower.

me either Laura! I think I'm going to ask my co-workers to bring in some pistacchio shells if they have them ;) I want to get a headstart on this and don't see myself buying them in the near future :)

Marg, just in case you have to eat your way to the proper number of shells, keep in mind the pistacchio is the lowest of all nuts in fat content and are good for you. ☺

I adore pistacchios Becky but my blood pressure doesn't so I don't eat them too often. Not saying that now I won't this weekend since it's on my mind now hehehe. thank you for the information...I didn't know it was the lowest in fat content and that's good to hear ☺

I DIDN'T SEE THIS EITHER!!! Kristi - thank you sooo very much for validating the fact that I AM NOT totally crazy!! I've been saving pistaschio shells 4-ev-r too! About 3 or 4 yrs. ago my daughter was on a pistaschio kick. I immediately started saving the shells for "something" and of course my whole family had though I'd lost IT!! HA HA!! Now in all fairness, the only thing I'd come up w/so far was to put them on a birdhouse roof kinda like tiles! Just wait til they see this one!! Your idea was pure genus and totally adorable!!

My future son-in-law saw it and has practically begged me for it. I also took spackling compound and added a "stucco" finish to the box part - then lifted the spatula so that it formed the peaks when I pulled it away. I told him I thought it was more of an indoor

accessory though. I'm not sure how well it would hold up outside.

I would love to see it...I bet it's amazing. I'm totally going to start snacking on Pistacchios because I want to make something with the shells.

This had to have taken FOREVER to make just one of these!!! What did you use to glue them with? Hot glue? I'll bet you could get a similar feel with cut off pine cones, doncha think?

I have a bunch of saved pistachio shells because I planned to paint them and make a necklace or earrings or both. But don't know if I'll ever get around to it.

Ahna , I used hot glue to assemble everything. :)

FYI - I actually started hot gluing these and the whole key is to get the first three that make the center of the flower. After that it really is a piece of cake - very quick. I don't know if EVERYONE is aware of this but there is HOT melt glue and LOW temp hot glue. With this project, I would strongly advise using the LOW temp hot glue cause it's virtually impossible not to get it on your fingers. Now, I haven't made as much progress as Kristi L ...»
but it is fast & easy.

I WILL TELL YOU WHAT NOT TO DO: I thought maybe I could use food dye so I squirted some green into a cup of HOT water thinking the heat would make the dye take better! UMMMMM . . . . . . DON'T!!! My water was apparently waaaay too hot and it kinda melted the hot glue. Do what Kristi said and use Rit Dye or spray paint em!! LOL
