Walking the dog this morning I spotted American beautyberry already showing its brilliant lavender fruits. This great native is a must for the fall garden.
Hardy from Zone 7 to 10, full sun or part shade, it is a show stopper.

    I know you asked Walter, but sweet shrub is Calycanthus floridus, it blooms in spring with fragrant flowers that smell (to many) like a crosss between strawberry and banana, another great native. The botanical name for American Beautyberry is Callicarpa americana. Walter mentioned another species called Callicarpa dichotoma.

    are ahead of our area....color is just beginning to show..love them in the winter.. the yards are mostly brown stigs and some rody and evergreen.. especially when we have snow..
