Have an edging question.

I live in Florida and re-sodded my lawn with St. Augustine about a year ago. When I laid the sod, I didn't put any edging between the grass and the mulch bed areas. Now, the St. Augustine is growing shooters into the mulch bed. The roots grow into the weed control tarp and rip it when I pull them out. What do you recommend as the best long term edging solution? I think the plastic edging looks kind of cheap and am not even sure if it will work. Additionally, the home is 20 years old with lots of established trees around, to the ground is thick with roots. I think putting in an edging system that requires me to go more than a few inches below the soil will be very labor intensive due to having to cut up lots of roots.

I have the same problem in Atlanta. I run my Roundup spray nozzle two inches from the ground at the edge of the bed and it kills the sprouts with not much damage to the lawn. Some of the landscapers on HT will undoubtedly have recommendations for edging materials.

Scott,I relate the grass invasion is so annoying. I use Roundup Pro once a month on the border, and I adust the spray nozzle to a sharp stream and cover no mor than 2 inches. Do not under any circumstances spray a wider edge as the eye will go straight to it and it will not be pretty. I precircle the dates to spray on my garden calender on the pegboard in the garage and that way I stay organized. You can also use a brick edge but you will still have to spray for the clean neat look. Good luck!

As Garden Rebel suggests, better to do a little spraying once a month than having to deal with a big problem later. I am constantly pulling my neighbor's St. Augustine out of my Zoysia. It's very rewarding when you pull out a three-foot runner in one piece!

Try landscape curbing , keeps grass out of the beds and adds a great look to your landscape.
