Spooky and Sparkly DIY Halloween Pumpkin

It’s that spooky (and sparkly) time of year again – Halloween! Our toddler daughter picked out her very own pumpkin from our park district fall festival, and we brought it home for her to decorate. She had seen some glitter faux pumpkins at the store a few weeks ago and declared she wanted a “sparkly” pumpkin for Halloween, so we went with a kid-friendly glitter glue method to decorate it.

We’ve had great success with this pumpkin decorating method – the glue keeps the glitter contained so there’s not a huge glittery mess to clean up. But it’s also washable, so any inevitable little spills are no big deal. Just open the tube and apply the glitter glue directly on the pumpkin’s surface. It’s easy to create shapes and even words on the pumpkin with the tube tip, and the glue doesn’t run or drip.

This is a great independent project for a 3-year-old, and a perfect alternative to carving a pumpkin. We helped our daughter with her pumpkin design last year, but this year she was old enough to decorate it all on her own.

She had fun trying out all the glitter colors and creating big sparkly blobs. When she was done, we let the glue dry overnight and then put the finished pumpkin outside in the front yard.

The colors and shapes evoke the changing leaves of autumn. This pumpkin design turned out kind of Abstract Expressionist actually, like a painting by Cy Twombly or Helen Frankenthaler. But also sparkly!
