I have something that's very dear to me and the batteries have destroyed it. How can I make it work again?

If it's the batteries that caused the problem, chances are they're the wrong type, or somehow damaged themselves. You tried with different batteries that you're sure are the correct type as specified by the manufacturer?

Have the batteries leaked in the toy? All is not lost, just don't touch the batteries with your bare skin. Get rid of the old batteries, then take some white vinegar and steel wool to clean out the battery compartment. Allow to air dry for a couple of days before putting in new batteries. I've done this many time with toys that we have purchased at garage sales.
