It is defintely the way to go. I have been making my own with plaster of paris and it is so cost saving. Buy the samples from Lowes or Home Depot and it only takes a couple tablespoons of plaster, water and the paint. Make sure you mix the plaster of paris and water together first and then add the paint.
Instead of making it use flat paint. Or even tinted ceiling paint.
You can use plaster Paris
I teaspoon to 1 cup of gessco,
Lime or calicum carbonate, ad water it will slump, pour off the water and save it ad it to your paint, there is a recipe on here. Or just buy the samples of chalk paint. All different kinds of people are selling them so you can get the feel of it so when you make it you know if it's working for you. I bought Annie Sloan, and and CeCe. I needed to know the texture and feel of it.
There are recipes all over, but people are finding out these cheap homemade recipe so don't last. I tried Home Depot's and it's crap. It doesn't spread very far and it doesn't last. I ended up buying Annie Sloan chalk paint and the look and endurance are so much better, and it goes a long way!
I started out using home made chalk paint. It is a great way to start. Not everyone can afford AS. I suggest they always buy the samples. I have things I have painted three years ago with home made chalk paint. It does last. I agree once you use Annie Sloan or CeCe, or many others there is no turning back. But at the beginning sticking your money into it is hard for a lot of people, they can't afford it. I believe Annie Sloan tried many different things, I have read her books from the very 1 st. One. That is why I suffested gesso. It is one of the things she used to paint with and many other things. The first chalk paint was actually limestone paint. You use lime stone let it slump and you ad pigment. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying your own. To me it makes people curious and creative. And anyone who wants to try it I say "Go for it!". Encourage don't discourage someone who wants to try and it isn't affordable.
