This is another section of a mosaic floor I created

Made of stone and broken and cut tiles.

This is part of a gallery floor I designed several years back. I wanted to come up with a design that would lead the customers from one area to the next.

    Beautiful. Is it a patio?

Thank you all! Ellen this is a floor I installed in an art gallery I had a few years ago. It would make a fine patio tho as long as frost-proof tiles are used, I am in NC so we have lots of freeze-thaw to deal with here. Steve the flowers were fun ...I just put them in low-traffic areas in floor so they would not be toe-trippers :)

Beautiful work! What do you have in the center of the sunflowers? Also, how did you get those three square pieces to overlap and still be level? I bet everyone enjoys this floor when they are in the art gallery.

Thanks Folks :) Donna I placed small stones into the flower centers and the overlapping tiles are cut out and set into the pattern. I leave a consistant grout line around them all as I inset them.

I have done this before--but always had very sharp edges after breaking the tile. How did you avoid this problem?

I guess in a studio one would not be walking in bare feet. It is beautiful. I was just worried that it would be sharp.

Oh thank you Beth! Good Luck! Thanks for all the kind remarks and O! O! O! Thanks Jennie O :) Mary Ann and Karen I do shower floor the very same way! I keep a straight-edge near-by and keep a constant check on leveling pieces as I go. No ...you do NOT Need to sand the edges of tiles if they are all flush and the grouting is done properly. I use a thicker mix when grouting this type work and after I float the grout in ...I let it sit and get stif enough (approx 30 minutes) that when I ...»
sponge and shape the joints that I don't start wiping it out too much and sometimes I will regrout the same day to build it up more. NOTE* Regrouting Must be done the same day for best bond ...also before I break up tiles I use my wet-saw (tile saw) and cut any rolled or chiseled edges off (factory edges). This will ensure a flush set where it will be absolutely safe to walk barefoot on if grouted flush (don't let the grout dip in the joints any) :))
