Need advise/ideas for inexpensive window covering...

I have 2 standard windows in my living area..problem is that this room is on the east side of the house and can be dark later on in the day. I currently have blinds, but would like to have something that would cover the lower part of the window and have the top part open. This room is on the front of the house and faces a busy road..I want to let the light in, but cover the lower part for privacy..shutters would be great, but pricey. I have hit our area thrift store, but our small town doesn't offer much of a selection. Thoughts?

I have a similar situation, small interior windows that bring in great light and every lookie-loo that passes by on the sidewalk. I used a glass etching spray - you can find in home hardware stores or craft stores for less than $10 a can and get quite a lot of spray from each one. I sprayed the whole window on the outside and got a beautiful frosted window each time. Lets in all the light and no viewers. You could measure off the bottom half of your windows so only that portion is covered. It's much less expensive and easier to apply than window films, but the same basic idea. Best of luck.

@Donna Ring you can use inexpensive pillow cases to cover lower part just use clips and a tension rod xx

You can get the vinyl window stuff that you just attach with water and a little squeegee, but that can get expensive. As an alternative, you might want to try your hand at a homemade starch paste with a very decorative lace fabric cut to the size of the window. The starch paste will dry clear, so you will just be left with the beauty of the lace, and that would still allow light inside, but unless people were really close to the window, they wouldn't see much inside.

Stretched cotton canvas the size of the lower portion of the window would let in filtered light but would give your room privacy from the outside.

I have 2 sidelight windows at my front door (length of the door) and I put vinyl contact paper on them. It's like clear vinyl but it's not really clear. It has rows of little diamond shapes all over it. It really lets the light through but you can't see through it. It was very easy, not expensive at all, and has been in place now since 1993 and I haven't had one bit of problem with it.

Or shutters are always attractive, on the bottom half of the window. open when you need more light.

Get a piece of lace the size of the bottom part of your window. If your window is wood,staple the lace in place and cover with narrow strips of wood. If vinyl use double stick tape, cover with narrow wood strips

The mini slats are quite inexpensive. Why not have 2 per window - one for the top and one for the bottom.

What about a tension rod with hook clips and cute napkins. You can slide them open when you want light and sun and close them when you want privacy. Don't forget to share what you decide.

Put up a rod half way between the window. Find some sort of curtain or piece of material to hang just on the bottom area. Cafe curtains. You could cut up sheets, anything you may find to match, applique s whatever. You didn't say how big your window is but I am sure you could come up with something! This way the top stays open or hang a matching valance????
