You can but if it is not evenly sprayed, when you put the light on it looks horrible.it is hard to evenly sprau or paint with rush. You could buy black rope and wind around shade.

I have painted many lampshades with some great results and some not so great. I found if I primed them first and painted the inside a metallic color and the outside a matt spray with a couple of coats they turn out rather well. sk

Worth a try if you're changing decor. Depending on the frame, you could possibly recover it with different fabric.

I'd prime first. Zinzer 1-2-3 has primer in spray form. Did an awning that had stains, and then a fabric paint. So far so good.

I did and the spray doesn't go evenly on but it gave it a rustic look, I think it turned out great.

I have not tried this, but you might look into Rit Dye and a large bucket..... Just a thought. I have 2 matching lamps, that I want pink shades on. I am planning to dye them. A cover (similar to a little skirt, is also a great idea ! You can pop it over the shade, and remove it for either a different look, or a good spring cleaning ! Good luck !

@Joline Cosman Joline, the dye's a good idea for yours (though I question how it would work with a black shade). But aren't you afraid the frame will rust using the bucket technique? I like to remake shades and hate when I find rusted skeletons. Sometimes the rust even transfers onto the fabric itself. You might try painting the dye on; I've painted raw wood with it and it works beautifully, though I've never tried it with fabric. Just a thought.
