DIY Dutch Door: Turning a Hollow Core Door into a Dutch Door

See how I took a hollow-core door and made it into a dutch door. It works great as a "doggy gate" for my golden retriever, in a dark room in our house. I love how functional it makes this room now!

Oh my gosh Angela, I'm loving this idea. I never thought of using a dutch door inside the home. I chose a louvered door for our laundry room for venting, but I like this idea much better.

One of my aunts had a back door that was a dutch door. Inside they'd be perfect to keep pets (well not cats) and children out of places you didn't want them to go yet allow for airflow or light through.

Angela, I love your idea & agree with Becky that it is a much better than a louvered door simply because it is soooooo much easier to keep clean.

Great idea Angela. Isn't it nice when mom & dad come to visit and you can get some of the "hard" jobs done? But, it's not fair that you didn't share a picture of the dog with us!!

The ledge went into the bottom half, right? Did you put a new rail in the bottom of the top half? For others about to do this...take on old hinge with you to buy the template as hinges have different screw patterns and different radii on the corners.

Great idea and really great design. Love Dutch doors, they are so cottage.

@Penny, I was going to add a piece under the top half but have never done it. You can't see it so I probably won't. Thanks for adding about the hinges!

Your door looks great! We did this more than 20 years ago because our dog was aging and having accidents. The door allowed me to check on her frequently. Still have it, our dogs love to know we are there when they have to be in the utility room.
