Hi, I was reading about your hardwood floors. I have my own business cleaning homes and I have done many hardwood floors. I would suggest (low traffic) wet mop with warm (NOT HOT) water once a week, every 2-3 weeks wash with Bona for hardwood floors. Just put it in the warm water, not a lot, maybe 1/2 cup per 2-3 gallons of water. If it is heavy traffic use the Bona weekly. Good luck. BB in PA

Barb's tip is right on. I would only add that windex is ok for spot cleaning, and also to ensure you dry the floor after you mop. Use a well wrung out mop.. I personally use a rag to make sure it does not get too wet. The vacuuming is important to pickup small debris which will wear the finish faster, so that is a good step you're taking.

We have factory finished solid oak hardwood floors and I vacuum and use a Bissell steam mop for cleaning. Since it's steam it cleans quite well, but leaves no moisture on the floor for more than a couple minutes. I've never needed to dry it since by the time I'm finished most of it is already dry. I use no chemicals whatsoever on the floor because of my allergies.

You're welcome Zografia. I'm all about making house cleaning easy and healthy. I have a hand held steam cleaner for other hard surfaces in our home.

Hi Zografia - I'm sure we should mop our floors much more often but when we do, we use warm water with some white vinegar added in (we use vinegar and water to clean nearly everything).

i have read about vinegar, Crystal, but to be honest i am afraid to use it on the floor. I use it all around the house, but i have not tried it on the floor.

I also clean homes and businesses. The advice Barb gave you was right on spot. If you use a steamer you are forcing steam down into the wood and it will damage wood floors. Vinegar is a acid and damages the surface and it will etch and dull the surface and once it reaches the wood. Bona is also what I use. If you go to the manufactors they suggest you can also use a squirt of mild dish soap in a large bucket of water, a micro fiber mop. ( Walmart sales a cheap one for about $9.00. ...»
Buy a extra pad. I soak my pad in the bucket and wring the heck out of it. Less water on floors is better. Then I dry the floors with a micro fiber pad. You want to keep water off the floors. For light cleaning I use a spray bottle of water. And spray and again use the mop to dry. I like Bona. It dries fast leaves no residue build up.

You anyone can go to the manufactors sight. Type in guidelines or cleaning guidelines. Each manufactor that manufactors wood will give you the same basic cleaning instructions.

Thank you Sherrie. We live in a rented house and i have no idea who installed the floor. For the moment there only two of us living here, so it's low traffic!

Any manufactor has the same guidelines...basically it says no steam, ammonia, vinegar, wood soap, steam. A micro fiber mop for me is key I buy the cheap ones and dry the floors. Water or a spray bottle of water is free. If really dirty I use the mop and I have use a tiny little bit of mild dish soap. And dry them. But honestly I use Bona. They dry fast and keep them nice. And if the floors are really dirty I use the micro fiber mop wet, spray the bona and then dry the floors.

We had hardwood floors in our former home. Two dogs, two boys and this was my cleaning method for almost 20 years. Clean with a little electric broom to get the big stuff off (pet hair, any sand/dirt, etc.). Dust it next. At first I used Swiffer but it seemed like it was getting kinda pricey so I decided to use some very soft fabric that I sprayed with dusting spray (like Endust)...not polishing spray! Using vinegar and water in a spray bottle I sprayed in a small area and then ...»
immediately "mopped" it with a microfiber mop. It shined like it was new right until the day we sold the house. I usually vacuumed/"dusted" it several times a week (yeah..I actually like cleaning..haha!) but mopped it only about once every 2 - 3 weeks. It never sat with water on it; hence I believe that's why it stayed looking nice for so long.

To Zografia and Ruth.....Honestly I used a little hand held bottle for my water/vinegar mix. The size you buy in the hair accessories section of Walmart ;-) Probably about a 2 cup sized bottle. In that I used mostly warm water and then added in about 2 tablespoons of vinegar...maybe less. People talk about disinfecting stuff. Really folks...germs are everywhere! Why would we even have to think about disinfecting our floors that much! If we have any carpeted areas, those are the places ...»
that harbor far more germs than solid surfaces we can wipe frequently. Off topic a bit here but I rarely ever used an disinfecting type of commercial cleaner for anything...even when our kids were little in school. The "rule" was "Wash your hands as soon as you come home from school or being out in public." We used plain old soap; not antibacterial. We rarely were sick! My husband is a piano tuner so he's out in other people's home, churches, schools, etc. daily where lots of people and germs are. So what I'm saying is, unless there is really something on the hardwood floor Zografia, and there's just two of you in the house, and traffic is low, why bother to wash it much anyway ;-) Like I mentioned before, even with the traffic we had, I didn't "wash" it all that often. Keep it dusted, vacuumed and occasionally "mopped" if necessary. Don't think you want to use vinegar? Then just use plain clean water will probably do the trick :-)

thanks Connie! i am not a germ maniac! i grew without disinfectants as so many others did with no problem! over reacting is as bad as not reacting , and that goes for all the things in our lives i believe!
