Have you ever painted a laminate wood table?

Has anyone ever painted one? Is it worth it? Did it last? What process/techniques did you do?

I have decoupaged them then painted a design on that and finished with a couple coats of spar varnish for a solid sealer.

I would also like to get people's input as I have to do the same thing with a table top. I was thinking of using chalk paint as I'm sure it's an easy process and will look great.

@Auntie Lin I did the paper bag floor technique - http://www.domesticimperfection.com/2013/03/paper-bag-floors-a-tutorial/ on a table and loved the final look - painted the bottom shelf with an acrylic paint - all holding up well - did lots of poly coats on the upper part of the table - http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/roadside-rescue-table-and-brown-paper-2160844 Very easy to do and fun to see it transform.

Yes, you can paint laminate. My hubby is a piano tuner/technician. We had 5 pianos built in the 1950's all with laminate type surfaces. We cleaned them realllllly well then spray painted them. Worked like a charm :-) We know the surface lasted because he tunes the pianos at the new owner's locations and they still look great.

Another option is to use a binding primer (after a really good cleaning of course) then paint as usual. Latex works well (less smell, easier cleanup) but oil base paint and primer will last longer. Personally I'd go for latex paint & primer and touch up as needed :-)
