With all the buzz about chalk paint, I had to give it a try. We had a scabby old dresser that didn't owe us anything. It seemed like a low risk adventure! We made a backplate out of an old board and found a wooden decorative piece in an box of spare parts. The recipe we used was 5TBS. plaster of Paris mixed with 2TBS. water added to 2cups of paint. We got a bit aggressive with the sanding back, I may go lighter next time.
The knobs are end caps salvaged from some metal rods that we had in the basement.

Thanks, it was fun to try, Kent read my post and thought i should have mentioned the difference that the paste wax made. He didn't like it untill after that step had been done. Also, we put a bit of vasaline on the areas we wanted to sand back, this really saved time as the paint didn't stick to the vasaline.
We used a tinted minwax paste finishing wax. It is tinted for applying to dark furniture and added a beautiful soft glow! I am really pleased with how it worked.
@Donna - I'm standing right on the edge of the "pool" and I'll be jumping in any day now. Still picking everyone's brains - especially when it comes to the wax part!!
Go for it Susan!
This weekend I worked on three ideas for diy projects to feature on the blog... None of them worked out as I expected. One failed terribly, one was just not good enough to feature and one worked out fantastic... You never know, just have fun!
