It's beautiful the way it is but I think mirrors or photographs would look great or a combination of the two. I think I would probably go with the mirrors.
I was thinking black and white photos too....maybe on the sides and a mirror in the middle....I love the oval shape for a mirror. Either way or whatever you decide, please post updated photos to show off your masterpiece!!!
I know what it is! It looks just like the front panel of my 1910 Baldwin upright piano. The frames may have had frosted glass in them many years ago. Mine is not as ornate as this one, but the dimensions look the same.
To add the information... the top lid flipped up, and the front panel lifted up and out, like a leaf in a table. This gave access to repairs of the hammers and attaching the strings on the upper harp. Someone must've junked the rest of the old piano and your piece is all that is left. And as ornate as it is, I would've loved to see it!
Kelly, you may very well be right! When I bought it at a thrift store, the center panel had a small oil painting in it. Maybe someone had already converted it to a wall hanging. Thanks for the possibility. :)
Glad I could help! My parents got that piano when I was 15, and I bought their house 10 years ago, so that piano has been in that corner of my dining room for almost 35 years. It's pretty shabby, but the carved legs and exposed hammers give it so much character.
Mom & dad pulled the piano out of an old ladies' basement. Isn't it amazing the things we find in unlikely places -- or unlikely things in common places!
i just signed up to Hometalk a minute ago and I'm compelled already!! I'm loving this piece. All the above ideas are super creative, although I'm seeing a monogram somewhere in this, whether a three initial or single last name initial, or an & with the couples initials with Est. date in the center opening along with black and white or sepia photos of bride and groom in the remaining. Would love to find this in a thrift! It would make my day or week!
