@Mary Campbell Tharp what a beautiful piece of furniture. I agree it is a bit dark, but from my preferences - I look some wood to show with such a beautiful piece. If you want to paint there are many ideas on here where the piece is totally painted while others show how to effectively show the wood of the piece while still using paint on other areas. Do update us on what you do, I love to see the refinished pieces.

Would not paint. You might entertain the idea of putting a dry strippable wallpaper on the back of the display area so your items show up better..

I don't think I would paint it but rather something like what Marion suggested. I think I would cover light cardboard that has been cut to fit with cloth, paper, paint & lace, glass pieces or tiles, or mirrored to accent the hutch. I love the color combo of the walls and the hutch.
