DIY Bottle Tree

Yep, that's a 10 foot tall tree made out of different diameters of steel round rod complete with colored bottles my mom collected from friends and a few she purchased from the internet. She estimates that it cost about $300 for materials. $150 for the metal and $150 for the colored bottles. Lots more about my mom's DIY bottle tree (and where the bottle tree tradition came from) on the ol' blog. #SummerStyle

Bottle trees are meant to keep bad spirits away, if I remember correctly. My grandmother had one when I was a little girl. She said, "Not only did the bottles get dried out so we can rebottle them, but they keep them bad spirits away."

I've heard that the red bottles are not made of red glass, but are plain glass with red paint or cellophane-like covering. That's the reason they peel. There are red glass bottles out there, but they're pretty expensive. This info comes from a friend who has bottle trees.

I've heard that the reason u don't see 'real' red bottles because it takes gold to add to whatever process that makes the 'red'.

I wonder how this tree sounds on a windy day? Do the bottles clang against the metal on a windy day?

I have a large corner fence post in my backyard....I got VERY large nails at the hardware store and hammered them in all over it and put bottles on it. Anyone who doesn't have a fence post in their backyard could improvise with a landscape timber buried 1/4 in the ground with nails on it!!

Marie, it is true gold is used to make glass red. It is very interesting to go on line and look up what makes glass different colors. I just know any red glass is expensive!

I bought a red bottle at Pier 1 for $8 to try out. It eventually faded but it was pretty nonetheless. I love bottle trees! Now I'm saving blue bottles for an all blue tree!

My ten-year-old grandson made me a bottle BUSH by driving all lengths of rebar into the ground in a eight inch diameter...some tall (none over three feet from ground to tip) and some at varying heights to round it out. He took old bottles I had collected in my shed and put them on each rod. I thought it was wonderful.

Jessica Martin, what a delightful story! And just think, one day a famous sculptor who once made his grandmother a bottle tree sells his works for big bucks! You just never know what starts a spark in the mind of a child! This kind of thing is what makes a house a "home".

If you like bottle trees or other uses for bottles. Budwiser has cobalt blue ones now. We don't drink but a bar might give you theirs, My dear husband looks around camping areas. he will bring them home . Also it is a good way to help the highways and back roads, we pick up cans and beer bottles,I love cobalt anything, and place in my windows,
