Cabinets Kitchens Painting

Painting kitchen cabinets with Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations

Giving a small apartment a new look on a budget. Painting the cabinets really brightened up the tiny space. With a tight budget, I love the power of paint and the way it can transform so much, don't you? #bestof2012

After - the painted cabinets give this one room first floor (combined kitchen, dining, living room space) a bigger, cleaner look.

I use to paint my old cabinets with Rustoleum and they really looked great. I had a fire in my kitchen, so now I have new cabinets. But for years it worked well for me.

Liking that you like Rustoleum too, Juana ... not about the fire. How tragic!

Wow this is awesome, I was wondering about what type of paint to use, I'm about to get into the kitchen and I think they were coated with poly after they were stained....am planning on replacing the doors but painting the boxes...

Laurie - it's a specific kit designed for painting cabinets. The fact that I could degloss the wood cabinets rather than sand them is what sold me on the kit.

GREAT! Thanks for the info. My husband is a carpenter and he keeps telling me that it is just tooooo hard and a lot of work for me to redo the cabinets! Now, I have a way to make it happen!

Did you paint your countertops too?

We did this and what a major difference! absolutely love it and it was pretty easy to do. Gave our kitchen a whole new look and cost a fraction of what new cabinets would have cost. There is a counter-top application too.

They look beautiful. I hate mine, that are a very very dark color with nic's in them. I would like to try and improve them but I am scared to death that if they don't turn out nice he will kill me. What do I use to fill in the nic's and how do I prepare the wood. I am having a pergo floor put in next month and I know that the cabinets will look even worse. Pray for me.

Another question, can I have everyones thoughts if you have a Pergo floor, who is the best ...»

company that makes Pergo? How did your color hold up and what color did you choose? I really need this info. Thanking you in advance, Barb

Sharon - it's only been a few weeks and we're still renovating. I can tell you I've been putting tools and paint cans/etc., drinks sweating, etc. on the counter with no problem. We also did have water from a leak (and a patch of ceiling/drywall dust) fall onto the countertop by the sink overnight. No issues. Cleaned right up. So my experience is that the countertop is durable!

Barb - You're local to me! Hi 'neighbor'! :) I don't mind imperfections such as nicks/etc. but ...»

if they were huge gouges, I'd use wood putty to fill in and lightly sand before painting. The kit was a really easy way to DIY (they even have different colors) with detailed instructions and a DVD to help with getting the technique right. And sorry, no help with the Pergo but maybe someone else with experience will chime in or post your question using the "ask" button so everyone can see with a chance to give you some input. Hope that helps!

I decided not to paint my cabinets on the wall or the ones that go to the floor. Wall cabinets look great but bottoms leave something to be desired. Is there something to fill in the nicks and can I get or try to get the same color to just put on a bit of paint so it won't look stupid. Can I paint the thingies that the drawers slide in and out of.

Barb M. since you will actually be "painting" the cabinet you can use wood filler. thats what we used, a little light sanding when it dried ad then follow the normal process

Well I rolled my ankle and thought I broke it Tuesday night....so now I'm frustrated cause I had started packing up the kitchen and can't walk on my foot... so it looks like my pland are on hold for a while...

Barb - Lynne had a great suggestion about filling in. If there are huge nicks and you're going to paint, I would use a wood filler too then sand before painting. I would not recommend painting the moving parts (the sliders for the drawers).

Sharron! Oh no! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Thanks Lynne for your info. What did you use to cover the filler with?

Used Rustoleum's Transitions for my unfinished kitchen cabinets. Didn't like the glaze color so I settled for the yellow cabinets which brought out the yellow in the knotted pine and really brightened the room. Bad lighting in this photo but I am very happy with the results.
