What are good flowers for winter in Northern California?

Some pots are on a protected deck with overhang. They get eastern light in the am. The others get southern light and are protected by walls but open to the out of doors.

I am not sure how far north you are, or what you minimum temperatures are, but, in general, but this a good time for California wildflowers because rains are more regular. For your sunny site, California poppies would do very well, I think, as would the various species of Layia and Penstemon. For your shadier location you might seek out Nemophila maculata. Check with a good local nursery to confirm that these would do well in your specific area. Happy planting!

Thanks for your help! I should mention that CA is in a severe drought for the past 3 years. Temperatures get in to the 40's in the winter with some frost.

Go with natives as much as possible and xeric types where possible. A great source is High Desert Gardens....they have an incredible selection of lovely plants, mostly perennials, that are xeric and look good, with most being pretty low maintenance. Shrubs that do well are Russian Sage, caryopteris, butterfly bush, some of the shrub type honeysuckles, elderberries (which gives you good berries if you can beat the birds to them). One good place to search for what will do well in your area is the Sunset Western Garden book....detailed climate descriptions/maps and everything from ground covers to trees. One of my favorite books, hands down....should be at the library or sometimes in used book stores.
