One of my favorite projects was to buy one of those rub on wall sayings and put it mid-wall, and then place family photos in frames randomly across the wall. Us different size and colored frames. It is the family room after all.

I like the combination of mirrors, architectural pieces and empty frames. Create a gallery wall with these items you can find at 2nd hand stores. You can paint or distress to match your decor.

How about making it into a library wall with lots of shelves. You could use it for books, and also baskets for storage. Maybe even add a few trophies here and there :)

What about putting up the narrow, long art shelf and lean paintings and pictures on it. You could go with favourite family things or all the same colour frames or all the same size or big and small, the choices are endless. That way you are only putting holes in the wall for the shelf itself.

You could always put in a big bookcase that also has an open area to hang a flat screen tv. Use more than books for the shelves like photos, collections, dvds, cds, etc. There are all different sized bookcases. If you have an IKEA store near you they have a good selection.

How about finding a large piece of fabric you love and stretching it like a canvas over a frame you make. Old ' 70's college trick
