DIY Grouted Vinyl Tiling

After weighing our options for bathroom flooring, we decided to try vinyl tiling with grout between to give it the appearance of genuine tile. We couldn't be happier with how it turned out, how easy it was and how inexpensive the entire project was!

To learn how to lay vinyl tiling with grout, check out the tutorial on The Rehomesteaders' blog at: http://therehomesteaders.blogspot.com/2012/0...

No need for cement board or a tile saw--vinyl tiles are cut easily with a utility knife or heavy duty scissors.

Vinyl tile grout comes premixed and is the consistency of caulking but dries hard like any other grout.

So far, so good! I'm really quite pleased with it--the quality for the price is probably what makes me happiest, haha! :)

Do you know if i can use vinyl tile on top of my Mable tile without taking it out. I need to update my bathroom floor but i don't want to take out the current tile.

I've learned something NEW! WOW! I will have to look into this some more for my projects! I have a split level, with the lower level of my home (den, laundry room) being below ground. I've removed the carpet and been investigating options for flooring. This just might be what I am looking for!

This is amazing. I saw this on one of the HGTV shows and it looks so easy. Grouting is such a mess!

We have the vinyl tiles that you grout at the Home Depot. I often wondered how that worked out. looks great!

I don't know about over marble tiling...that might be a question for the manufacturer or a home improvement store flooring specialist. Good luck!

@Marg - do you work at H.D.? Maybe you should pick somebody's brain there and see what they have to say about this method. I'm liking the sound of this but I'm wondering why you can fit the tiles up to the toilet and cut around it instead of having to take it up. That doesn't sound like much fun!!

Susan--it's almost exactly like tiling so if you didn't want to pull your toilet or sink base up, you wouldn't have to. We just prefer doing it so we don't have to be so precise about cutting our lines because they'll be under the toilet. :) Hope that helps!

I think I'm confused. (what's new!) The comment I made above was because I thought these were the tiles that come with the grout lines. That's what I saw on HGTV. You don't have to grout. I imagine those are pretty expensive, though I haven't checked them out. These look great and even though you have to grout them, still would be so much easier since you don't have to have special tile saw.

I thought you always had to remove the toilet and pedestal sinks when tiling. You wouldn't have to remove a vanity though.

We looked into the vinyl tile with grout but decided to go with real slate. For us it made sense as I didnt want the work or cost of having to replace it again in a few years and at the end of the day its still a vinyl product. It sure looks good now though.

Be cautious! Vinyl tiles, like vinyl sheet flooring, can raise along edges. Quarter round installed at baseboards prevents this on the sheet vinyl. Hopefully the grout serves the same purpose......your floor is lovely!

Thanks for the reminder Dianne--we made sure to really get it to stick and have put baseboard over the top. Seems to be holding up really well. The kind we got is a lot thicker and heavier duty than the cheap roll out kind.

Also, don't forget that grout is not water proof on it's own and in a bathrom especially, you'll want to put down a sealer...LOL I have all boys, so all I can think of is the mess they always made...LOL YUCK!

BUT I do love the job you did and how great it looks, so I'm really impressed with your "thinking outside the box" Can't wait to see the rest...Great job you two...

Tho't of doing this myself, but was afraid the grout wouldn't be thick enough to keep from cracking after a bit. How long has it been since you did this? Also, did you leave extra space between the tiles to allow for more grout? Thanks!
