When we bought our house last year the once big thing we knew we needed to change was the fireplace in the family room. I did a white wash technique of 1 part white latex paint 3 parts water on the brick. I brushed the water/paint mix on the brick and rubbed with a towel to dry... it took going over the bricks twice to get it to look the way I wanted. We also primed the wood bookshelves and painted the wood gray. This completely lightened the room up and makes it seem much bigger. The last thing I plan to do is to paint the fireplace cover with high heat black spray paint.
The family room when we did the walk through.
The finished product.

Marion Nesbitt on Nov 13, 2014Personally, I like the warmth of the copper. It also picks up the colour of the floor, and other brownish hues like the wicker.
