How to insulate a window?

  • 3M makes some wonderful insulation kits that can be purchased at most home centers and big box stores. The install is as simple as placing a easy to remove double stick tape around the moldings of the window. Then a thin clear plastic is placed and fastened to the tape. Once its stuck to the tape, excess is removed using a sharp knife or razor blade. Take the hair dryer heat the plastic. As this happens the plastic will shrink and become drum tight on the window making it almost disappear. Each window might take 10 min to do. Here is a how to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vj6vCFoYcE

In addition to @Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com 's suggestion of the insulation kits, before you use the kit, if it is a window that you don't look out a lot, you can take bubble wrap (recycled from packages or new), cut to fit inside the window casing, taping together with clear tape if needed. I taped mine to the window casing with masking tape and then used the insulation kit mentioned above. It makes a really big difference and used up all that bubble wrap I had been hoarding, uh...I mean storing!

Don't forget that you can also hang heavy drapes to keep the drafts out. Ensure that the drapes don't fall short of the width of the window though, they need to cover that area to keep the drafts at bay. Better a slightly longer curtain rail than one that is too short.

I have ordered "solar curtains" from a catalog. They are very inexpensive and hang on curtain rods behind your regular window dressing. It is a thin metallic material. One side is silver and it can either keep in the heat or keep out the cold. I absolutely love them. I purchased them from Healthy Living Catalog. www.amerimark.com. The price is $4.99.
