any advise about adding hardwoods to a room next to a room that already has hardwood.

Should the new wood match the color and / or size of the existising wood floor? The new rooms to cover are the kitchen/ breakfast nook, and family room combo, open floor plan.

Mike, Ideally you want to match all of the hardwoods though out the rooms. By choosing different colors, styles or types it will look out of place. Much like putting two different carpets in adjoining rooms. While it works, just does not quite look right. While it might be hard or very expensive to exactly match the size of the boards, assuming you already have perhaps a oak or pine flooring installed. But a good flooring contractor should be able to find something that will blend in size and color so the flow from room to room looks ok.

Having mixed woods is actually more common than some people think..oak is by far the most common so it is pretty easy to match. I would NOT recommend wood for a kitchen, the risk for water damage and pre-mature wear from the busiest room in a home is too great.

Wood floors in a kitchen are very popular here in the South. We certainly do not give them the abuse that happens above the Mason Dixon line. Do what you can to match them OR, you can do some creative patterns that will make a good transition from one space to the next. Here are some examples:
