Help! How do I clean up a rusty toilet and bathtub?

Elizabeth
by Elizabeth
We live on a farm and have a well that we receive water from. We have a horrible, horrible rust problem. I have used every available product and nothing works to curb this rust. It looks bad, I keep the shower curtain closed so I don't have to see it. Anyone have ANY help or products or things to try to rid my life of this eyesore?

  • CRL is about the best over the retail product that you can use. Ideally you need to filter the water using a good quality filter to catch most of the metals that are causing the rust to begin with. But the CRL should do the trick. If its really stained it may take several cleanings to get it removed. Do your best not to use abrasive cleaners as it will scratch the surface of the tub, sinks and bowls making it even harder to remove stains later on.

The rust is from metals in the water. I believe there is a filtration system you can put on the well that will cut down the problem.

I had the same problem in our weekend place. CLR works but I found that soaking a cloth in CLR, covering the stained tub, and placing the rubber tub mat over it made scrubbing a breeze. Pouring CLR in the commode when we left stopped rust stains there.

Thank you for your input......it is my boyfriends house and he doesn't want to spend a lot of money so I doubt he would do that.

If you don't have a water softener to get rid of most of the rust before it come through the pipes and into the house you will fight this rust forever. We have a water softener but when we are on vacation or the softener isn't generated enough we still get rust in the toilets, shower etc. I have tried EVERYTHING you can imagine. The only thing I found that works without having to scrub is The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner or Sno Bowl. Make sure you wear rubber gloves and a mask (it is extremely dangerous to breath the fumes) ventilate if possible. I usually just squirt it all over the shower and/or bathtub starting at the top, let it just run down the walls the rust will disappear. For any places that still have rust on them I use wads of paper towel or a rag that I can throw away to put more cleaner on and wipe the rust away. Quickest, easiest way to get rid of rust

Thank you for your reply, no I haven't tried that...I am not even sure if my store carries that or not...we live in a rural area and just have a small country store that we shop at. Next time I am near a bigger city I shall look for this. I appreciate the help.

Iron Out. My dad has to put it in his toilet. His is so bad that even Culligan's can't keep his water from going orange.

To.get the rust off first zud may not work alone. Often it may b necessary to soak paper towels in bleach or even better old rags, which won't disintegrate. Place on rusty areas and let sit. Then apply zud, even comet will work, scrub hard. Good luck!!

Thank you Rahel Z...I will try and find some "Iron Out". It seems to me I have heard of it, but never tried it. Our water is like your Dad's, orange. We only bathe and wash dishes in it....never drink it.
