Mystery Plant

I started this little plant from cuttings about 4 yrs. ago. I had no idea what kind of plant it was or even if the cuttings would root, I just liked the plant so I was willing to give it a shot! I was elated when it started growing!! I watered it today and the "lightbulb" went off.. Hometalk!! Someone out there must know what kind of plant this is. It's very thick and hearty. And as you can see, for 4 yrs. old, it's not very big so it's a slow grower. Any guesses out there?

    Is HOYA /fiori diceva
  • Deborah Deborah on Nov 11, 2014
Yes it's a hoya for sure. I had one that I started off my sister-in-laws plant in 1992 and I left it with my neice in Utah in 2012 because I didn't think it would make the trip to Washington, the great northwest, without crokeing. I gave many starts off that one plant to friends and family. In the whole time I had that Hoya it only bloomed 3 times but it was beautiful and it grew like crazy. They get pretty long if you let them. I've also heard the called Hindu rope plant (I don't know why though). I would love to find another Hoya to grow.

Yes, Hoya....I had one once & they do grow very slowly. It will bloom eventually & as I recall the blossoms have a very nice, delicate scent. http://plantcaretoday.com/how-to-care-for-grow-and-bloom-hoya-plants.html

I think it needs to be root bound before it will bloom. BUT... my Mom has one in a jar of water hanging in her window & it has bloomed... but the roots are kinda packed in that jar.

Yes, its a member of the large hoya family; native to Asia and Australia. Common names is waxplant.. Some species are very fragrant and drip with honey, while others are less scented.

I've had a Hoya plant for 40 years. It gets bright indirect light and blooms every year. The blooms are spectacular.

My Hoya is over 50 yrs old-it was a cutting taken from my grandmother's plant when I was 4 yrs old. And I have no idea how old the original plant was, but it was huge, so I'm guessing it was very old. They rarely bloom, but when they do, the flowers look like fake plastic flowers. Interesting plant.
