Old kitchen table

Susan
by Susan
This old cheap table with white burn marks is in need of an update. Can it be sanded down? Painting would be easy but I'd love some new ideas.

@Susan you can paint it with chalk paint and won't have to sand it you can buy a sample pot from lowes or home depot and make your own chalk paint there are a ton of how to's on here type it in search box, you could do a white with grain sack lines, or a graphic you can get a lot of them from the graphic fairy for free what ever you do just seal over it with a polycrylic and have fun xx

You could pad it, put oilcloth or vinyl over that, and staple it on the bottom. Just like recovering a chair seat.

Stain and poly or shellac. Do a marble effect top - saw one on here today - effect achieved with paint. Do a 'dipped in paint' effect for the lower legs only and do the chairs the same. Leave the rest either wood effect or paint a contrasting colour. Paint the frame black and have a silver top - bold move and not for everyone. Decoupage the top, using anything you like but maps are fun. Wallpaper to the top and glass cut to fit over it to keep it from moving and keep it clean. You can change the wallpaper when you want a new colour or design so you can ring the changes. So many things you can do. Or you can use timber slats to make a rustic table. Just affix them to the top using liquid nails or similar. Build a box frame and fit over the existing top to change the shape of the table. Whitewash the top and darken the frame with stain?

I sanded/stained/polyed a dining room table & love the look. First, sand off old finish, next I really distressed it, stained it a bit darker which highlighted the distressing. Last 3 coats of ply -light sand in between coats.

That looks like solid oak to me. If it is, you've got a high quality table. :) Is the top in great shape other than the white mark? If so, you can stain it much darker with #GeneralFinishes gel stain without sanding down to bare wood. Most people use the color Java because it's the most forgiving and does a fab job of covering imperfections. You could restain the top and paint the bottom. I just finished my 3rd round oak pedestal with the same finish it was so popular. Good luck whatever you do!

I sanded/stained/polyed a dining room table on top and then I painted the legs with a high gloss paint and it turned out incredible. First, sand off old finish and then stain top, paint legs and poly the top with 4 layers sanding in between each coat. A lot of work but I LOVE it and get compliments all the time! Please don't paint the top.

I just refinished that same table for my kitchen...I sanded the top...just the top, not the round edges..The I painted it flat black 2 times just up to that tiny ridge. Left the rolled edge of top as it was. Covered the black with satin poly x3 with sanding between each coat. I looks like a high end table ...

I think this is a parawood table...notice the random boarding. Check out the General Finishes website for tutorials using Java Gel (or another color!). They are very popular on Pinterest for changing the color of cabinets, vanities, stairs and railings, etc.

I agree with Stark6 if it is para wood. If it isn't there is probably veneer. If there is and it can be sanded I only use the finest grit sand paper possible and sand it down. I would paint the pedestal but I like psint.
