is a crawl space encapsulation worth the money?

I have my HVAC in the crawlspace with a dirt floor. No major leaking. Just humid.

    Hello,

Hopefully somebody will come along and be able to give you more specific numbers and such, but I'm pretty sure that it will help by keeping things like mold/mildew and other smells out from your home. It will most likely reduce your power bill a bit as well.

    Eamon,

Do a search on here using keywords KL K & crawlspace and you will see a couple of good discussions that will help get you started. A general search using "crawlspace" will pop several more. As Dan said, suspect you will get several comments from our other contributors on your post as well... Tim

Crawl space encapsulation is a bit costly but worth the money in the long term for health of the home and you. Humility and dirt will grow mold over time.

You may want to put an exhaust fan system in first Eamon. Basically have some power ran to a foundation vent and find the best fitting bathroom ceiling fan in the area. Air circulation is mold and mildews arch enemy! On in the hot, humid months and sealed off in the dryer, cooler months JL

Yes encapsulation helps in many ways. It prevents any radon gasses from getting into the house, it slows or stops the possibility of having mold develop and it also, depending on the methods used can save you money on your heating and cooling system operation.

I would say that there are many factors to consider when asking your question so to get the best answer have someone come out and give you a free estimate/assessment. Now from a heating and a/c experts point of view I think unless you have newer, very well sealed duct work it makes great sense to encapsulate. If you keep humidity low in the crawl then you minimize the humidity drawn into the duct work and likewise into your house. Lower humidity means the house feels cooler and therefore ...»
you can be comfortable at a higher temp. setting. Furthermore it will keep mold and mildew spores out and be a great selling point if you ever sell the house!

Done the right way it will be a huge energy saver! Done the wrong way it can raise your energy bill. Other than that you will see less pest, less odors, better air quality, longer life for the HVAC and water heater if it is located down there... the list goes on and on.
