What would you suggest to repair the wall above a fireplace?

Helping with repairs on my Aunts house which has been vacant for a few years. The roof leaked and the plaster on the wall above the fireplace cracked and a lot of it fell off. To my understanding this has happened several times over the years. Would you replace the plaster or maybe cut out the area above the mantle and place a trimmed bead board or something like that from the mantle to the ceiling? Which by the way has to be redone as well. The roof has been replaced so the leak should be fixed (it hasn't rained yet so I hope it is fixed. LOL ) Any and all ideas would be so welcome. Thank you so much.

Can you put up a picture of the fireplace?

I will be going over there tomorrow and I will get some pictures then I can add a couple, the ones on my phone do not show all of the wall. Yes I can do this..Thank you Jill. I guess it would be easier if you could see it, :)

Wait until you are sure the source of the problem is fixed. Then get in a pro to patch the plaster - it will be worth it.

Is the fireplace just plastered? If so you can sand it until is pretty even, they make 3/4 brick veneer that looks like real brick or stack stone.
