Crazy things that happen while making concrete countertops

I was working in the shop the other day by myself and this little guy flew in. It let me go right up to it and pick it up, i thought it might be hurt or sick but he was healthy and could fly just fine. After sitting on my hand for about 10 minutes i took him outside and he flew off. landed on the power line and sat for another minute and then flew off towards the trees.

Wonder if he bonked his head? We have a big shop with very high ceilings. They fly in and can't get back out. My husband get a spray bottle full of water and sets it on the stream setting and hoses the lil buggers down (when their wings are saturated they cannot fly) and as they fall towards the floor he simply holds out his hand and lets them land in his hand. He then gently takes them outside and sits them on the picnic table.. where they flap their wings to remove the water.. in couple of minutes, they fly away!

WOW Tina! How cool is that!! I didn't know they couldn't fly if their wings are wet.

I was watching a hummingbird the other evening , (it was dark out, thought it was a bug at first) realized what it was, started watching it fly around my flowers, I put my hand out to see if it would land on me...when it landed on the flowers , my cat came out of no where and grabbed it...She had it on the ground, holding it down....I grabbed Kwi, my cat, and sternly said her name,...and she let the hummingbird go...I thought for sure it would be injured, but it flew away.....My cat was ...»
wild when we found her,,....She kills everything....This sweet little hummer was lucky to get away....

I never knew hummingbirds were out after dark...

Angie, maybe he was one of those rebellious teenagers. I didn't know they were out after dark either. I also have cats - it's hard to love cats and birds since they don't love each other.

@Angie -- wow, how lucky that you were there and could grab kitty before she inflicted any damage. I didn't know hummers were out after dark either. Ours usually disappear right around nightfall. I think we've seen the last of ours til next spring. We haven't seen any activity for a day or so!!

All my "extras" have disappeared and I'm back to the original "family" of three.... I'm kind of sad, but also confused as to why the original group didn't leave when the others did....

Ellen, you are probably right....a rebellious teen...haha..Susan, yes, that little hummer was lucky, my Kwi Kwi kills everything and then eats most things.....She was a wild kitty about 5 years ago, and we have yet to domesticate her....

Angie - guess she still has that killer instinct huh? Our kitty was a rescue and from what we understand of her history she was well on her way to becoming ferel. She had a littler of kittens and somebody gathered her & the babies up and took them to a shelter downstate - then she ended up at a Petsmart in our town. She's a wonderful cat - long haired Calico. But, right after we first got her she killed a bird - and ATE it - the WHOLE thing! Haven't seen any evidence of it since then fortunately!!

All of my cats have been rescues and so have that "wild" intsinct also. But I have converted them to indoor cats because I also love my birds and have always had feeders and houses out for them and plant things that they would love. It was hard to begin with because they were born outside. One cat is 16 and the other 10 and so they are finally used to it although they enjoy sitting in my windows and chattering back at the birds. lol

@Sondra - I should probably practice tough love w/my cat but she gets such a cattitude if I don't let her out now & then and it does cut down on visits to the litter box. That's pretty lame huh??

Susan, I wouldnt say its lame at all. It depends on where you live. Growing up we never even had litter boxes as we always let our cats out for awhile. Its more natural. When we moved to Wisconsin we lived on a farm and I had 37 outside cats and 5 inside cats and tried putting my birdfeeders in locations away from the cats. It was hard, but there were so many birds out there and I loved watching them. I finally found homes for the cats that didnt get hit by cars (we were on a main ...»
highway) or taken by owls or other critters. The ones that were inside didnt want to mingle with the ones outside and only once did one make a break for it and only got as far as the porch before she realized what she did. She screeched to a halt and made a sudden beeline back into the house. lol. So funny to watch.

Sondra - sooo you had a virtual cat farm huh?? Were they good mousers??

We have deep woods behind our house even though we're in a development so she loves to go roaming. Other than the one incident we haven't seen her catch any more birds but we try to keep her well fed. Not that that really has anything to do with it - they like to hunt just for the sport of it!! My other kitty preferred to "go" outside and I never had a box for him. I could probably get this ...»

one trained to use the outdoors too!! Our feeders are all well out of reach too so we're not sure how she managed to get one unless it was at the birdbath.

Ellen - would you care to elaborate on that?

Actually, all of them seemed to be good mousers. I did put out dry food everyday just so they would stick around and not starve. As you said, they like hunting just for the sport of it and I often saw one of them bat around a mouse until it wouldnt move any more.

Yeah - they do tend to want to play w/anything as long as it moves. After that - well it's just no fun anymore!!

Susan, I'm pretty sure Ellen meant that her cats only come in to use the litter box LOL!!! I had a cat like that once. She would sit at the door waiting to come in and head straight for the litter box!

My cat Kwi will catch and kill anything that moves...I noticed when I first saw her, she was very good at catching things....She didn't trust me for a while at first, so I would set outside and watch how she acted....She would stay in the yard but not come to me,.....I have seen her catch and kill many many mice, moles, but she has also caught rabbits, bunnies, many birds, she even caught a squirrel once, (I'd say it wasn't very old, although looked almost full size)...The mother came ...»
after her, and was throwing itself into Kwi's side and making this awful noise,....It kept doing it until she let the smaller one down...It ran under the deck,.....the mother right behind it....I found it the next day, dead...Kwi must have broke it's neck...We have had her for 4 years now and she still kills things....She doesn't eat them now though....So maybe she is being domesticated....or just not hungry...

Since we moved to our new house in February, she has caught and killed 2 bunnies, 6-8 birds (ate a few), mole, and about 3 mice...Oh and lot's of bugs and a few butterflies...I'm trying to teach her No butterflies or hummingbirds...: )

my Precious kills anything that moves in my house. I don't know what I will do when she's gone! When I hear a mouse SQUEEK in the other room I say "good girl Precious" and then find the dead mouse and throw it outside in the woods. :D

My Bitty brought in a squawking cardinal the other day :( Bad kitty. I rescued the bird, took it outside and held it for a while, it was able to fly away. Hope all is well.
