Fun dining room makeover with a tin ceiling!

We recently completed a fun dining room renovation which included building a custom bookcase, installing a classic tin ceiling, and installing plenty of molding to make this a bright, fun space for the clients.

The bookcase was actually installed in front of a radiator shared with the adjacent room, so we had to seal the inside wood and use foam insulation to...

It's fun to see the transformation of the space, and how much the crown, wainscot panels, chair rail, and tin ceiling adds to it. The 2 doors flanking the bookcase we...

LOVE the tin ceiling! I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Yea! This looks so much better than that wood paneling ever could. Your solutions for the doors and radiator is fantastic! Love the periwinkle with the tin, and the white brightens the room. Great work!

Are tin tiles hard to install?

Hi Jil, not really. There are good instructions and some online videos you can search. The biggest concern is that you have a good surface to attach them to. We put up 1x4 boards first, and leveled them, and that gave us a good base to nail the tin tiles on. Some recommend to actually put up plywood on the ceiling so you have a large, flat surface.

One other part to be aware of is that you have to do a lot of over head hammering without ...»

smashing the tin. That might be tricky for some people to do.

Only other tip is to lay the tile so that the seams overlap in a way that they are not visible from the traffic side of the room... because they do show.

They are expencive - but I love the look -- do you think they would be okay in a bath room?

Great work! Where did you get those tin tiles? How much did they cost you?

What is the difficulty level of this project for average people?

Hi Carol, I'm not sure that a bathroom is a good place for the tin. I don't have any direct experience with that, but even if you paint the tile the moisture would penetrate. I would check with the manufacturer.

BJ- these are Shanko tiles bought via classicceilings.com. They have an easy quote process and you could quickly price out your space. I would rate the project as moderate difficulty. As I ...»

mentioned before, the prep work of the ceiling is the most critical step. Otherwise it's basically layout work, tin snipping, and hammering them up.

Hi Janet/ Julie.. These traditional tin panels came from ClassicCeilings.com and this one is a 2' x 4' Shanko brand tile. I can also suggest TheTinMan.com as well. Chelsea ceilings have good reviews.
