  • Added a picture of the bookshelf. Sorry about the christmas tree and the bit of mess. I am still trying to put the desk together! It's been a nightmare!

Furniture Revivals: Sprucing up an old bookshelf

I have an old, what looks like homemade, bookshelf that doesn't really match my decor. Very boxy and plain. It was perfect for my husbands "bachelor pad" but now that we have a home of our own and nice stuff, I want to redo the shelf to make it look pretty. I have seen some cute bookshelves out there that have pretty doors and lights, but don't really know how to start. Its literally a shelf constructed from planks about 3/4" thick and about 8" wide and it's about 7 or 8 ft tall. ...»
Stained brown. I have a desk I would like it to kind of match which is an antique cream color with wood colored top.

ever had this on and one other to compare it to. I was thinking about trying the wallpaper, but don't know how to go about putting it on there because the back is a thin piece of wood. Like 1/8" of an inch. Feet seem like a really great idea too.

BeckySue, it's going to be in my great room actually right where it is in the picture (sans the Christmas tree!).

Painting: Good cost effective paint

Hubby is gone for 5 months and I only work part time. I need a very cost effective paint (like super cheap but good) to do the Master bedroom, the upstairs hallway and loft area, the ...»
bathroom, living room, kitchen/dining room and guest rooms. I plan only doing accent walls. Not sure on the colors though. The kitchen is going to be a cranberry red, my curtains in the living room are olive green, beige, brown and off white stripes and the couches and chairs are all brown, beige and tan, my bedroom is all dark brown... Any suggestions on either question? What brand and what colors! I DO know that the one guest room is getting painted bright green and pink flowers to match the quilt I have in there (gonna be my step-daughters room). Everything in the house is either brown or an olive green. Help :)

Erin, If you go to a paint store for paint, you will draw from their deep and wide selection ...»
    of materials and advice.

Sher-Wms best contractor line is Promar 200. This is the best of the 'builders' quality. If you use anything cheaper, the return on investment plummets. You can get this paint for just under $30. unless you can get a contractors price.

All paints aren't created equal. I want to save the homeowner money too. To do so, the paint we buy is usually in the $40-$50. range, the cost being in direct relation to quality when it comes to paint.

Most of the investment is in the labor part of the job. Minimizing the grief factor and having a job that looks great for a long time is worth the incremental amount more you pay for good materials.

I applaud you for doing it yourself!

    Best, Charles

Outdoor Living: How do I clear debris from my front yard that has no grass only rocks?

I got a notice from our HOA today saying that our front yard is a mess. Now we just moved to Las Vegas from Charleston, SC and as all your Charlestonions know, pinestraw is used in every ...»
bit of landscaping. Well, I never gave it a second glance. Well our entire yard is rocks. Little red rocks to be exact. I hate them. I hate the yard. I, quite frankly, hate Vegas and the lack of grass, trees and rain. My question is, how do I get rid of the, what looks like pinestraw from the front yard without displacing the rocks. I thought a rake, but that would get the rocks in a tizzy, maybe a leaf blower? This is our first house (and we are renting it) we have always lived in apartments where the landscaping was done for us. I don't mean to sound stupid, but yardwork just isn't my forte, lawnmowing and weedwhacking is one thing, but actual yardwork is a whole other story!

  • This preset bath fan timer is a great solution for ensuring the bath fan runs for an adequate amount of time. The 30 minute preset is typically used for showering.
  • The duct shown is terminated to the exterior, which is required by code in most areas. Minimize the twists, turns, and fittings used in the ductwork for the best airflow.
  • The "paper test" in action.
  • Ensure proper make up air, because that is usually the only spot where it is drawn from during a shower.

Is Your Bathroom Properly Ventilated?

We've seen it probably more than 100 times. In an attic, the bath fan discharges directly into a pile of insulation. You would be surprised that it's more common than many people realize! ...»
If you don't know the condition of yours, it's worth a quick investigation. So, what are the indicators of a properly ventilated bathroom? Here are a few tips.

1. Select the correct size bath fan. Many have a square footage chart included at time of purchase, but there are tables available online as well, such as this one from HVI:

http://www.hvi.org/publications/HowMuchVent....

2. Ensure adequate make up air can reach the fan. As pictured, allow a minimum of 3/4" clearance under the door, and even more if possible. Use caution, however, that hollow doors only have a small solid rail at the bottom which could limit the cut off.

3. Always terminate the ductwork to the home exterior. In the photo, the duct is attached to a pre-cut galvanized sheet, and connected with a 4" starter collar. It is attached directly under a roof static vent which was installed solely for this purpose.

4. How long to allow a fan to run post-showering? The Home Ventilating Institute recommends that a fan should be left on for 20 minutes after a shower to thoroughly clear humidity and to ensure moisture and condensation in the fan body or ducting is minimized. A preset timer, such as illustrated in the attached photo, helps achive this.

5. Not sure if your fan is drawing air? As pictured, you can give it a quick (albeit not scientific) test using a sheet of paper. if your fan is blocked by insulation, the paper likely will not stick.

don't really take pride in the housebuilding anymore. The developers just want to crank out as many houses as possible to make a bunch of money. My house is less than 10 years old and there are SO many problems with it! I don't even have an access panel to get to the plumbing in my tub and I'm sure that there is mold under my shower pan.

Buyers beware! Shop at Ashley. They have great quality stuff, it's solid wood, and it lasts forever!
