@donna felz If possible, I would rent or buy a sprayer, at least for the doors (removed from the cabinets.). Spraying is faster, and it looks more professional. If not, use a very high quality brush, and thin your paint to avoid brush marks. Painting 2-3 coats of thinner paint, lightly sanding in between to remove grainy texture. I imagine that your red kitchen is going to look great! I love red.

I painted my dark walnut cabinets white and never regretted it. I used Kilz then two coats of semi-gloss. I used the small roller Shur line three coats total with Kilz. Hope this helps

Kliz is excellent for switching to Red from any other color. One painting trick is to use a tint of Pink in your Primer when switching to Red. For the next 2 coats.

@donna felz Use a high quality velour or foam mini roller (4" - Wooster, Whizz, or Purdy brand). The roller allows the paint to go on faster & doesn't leave unwanted brush stroke marks. Don't overload the roller. I have painted many, many cabinets in my own farm homes, condo & rental homes. Have fun & good luck! red sounds beautiful

@donna felz - Other than the appliation tool, Prep-work is the key to a great result. Be sure to clean with degreaser . I actually prefer "dirtex" it is powder cleaner (very inexpensive) you mix w water > it not only cleans off any residue that can't be readily seen, but it helps adhesion of the paint; and, you don't have to worry about rinsing a gizillion times. The other option is a "deglosser", rather than dirtex. It comes in liquid form.

Dura poxy is an excellent choice for the finish! The only other as good is Sherwin WilliamsProClassic Interior Acrylic-Alkyd Enamel. Depending on the cabinets you are working with you should really consider priming, if you haven't already. I highly recommend SW's Bonding primer; but, I understand there a couple of big box primers that are holding their own.
