Faux Painted Countertops

One of the first things I did when we moved into our home was to update some of the outdated finishes, like my ugly, pink countertops. I didn't have new granite countertops in the budget, but I did have some paint, glaze, and a couple of sea sponges on hand. I did have to go out and buy some bonding primer and some polyurethane, but the total price was still under $30. You can visit my blog to the details.

Taunnie, I MIGHT actually try this on the kitchen counter instead of replacing....but since I plan on replacing a couple cabinet bases, I might have to actually replace because of size....

Taunnie, great job! Don't you just love sea sponges?!! Looks very authentic and on such a grand scale! I did this with a pedestal base and included sparse metalic gold for a "mica chip" feel. I love working w/the sea sponges.

@karla...check my post above also, holds up very well. There are naysayers out there, as I pointed out, maybe they have never tried it. My friends' is still going strong, tho I noticed this weekend , after SEVERAL years on the bathroom she does need to poly it again.Maybe she didnt use enough coats on top initially.

HI Terrie Kaufman yes she did a beautiful job, I was thrilled with mine also, because this is an old dbl mhome and the thought of putting granite etc in here , is NOT GONNA HAPPEN! (Mine was Yeller! ha) My friend (above) recently got a new countertop and personally I love the dramatic effect she did on her countertop herself more than the new one! But we wont tell her that!! :) Taunnie what have you done recently? curious!

Thanks so much Terrie and Bernice :) I have been taking a little break from projects lately. My gallbladder has been acting up and I have been seeing a couple of doctors about getting it out. Hoping I will be back to myself soon.

Taunnie removing gall bladder was the BESTEST most effective medical thing I have done! And I had the big one (incision)..now they do the little one..ha. You go girl, you're going to feel soo much better! Such a sneaky thing, gall stones, never know when an attack is coming!

Thanks Bernice. That makes me feel much better. I am a little worried about the surgery, if I have the surgery. One of my tests came back normal which leaves me a little puzzled as to why I am having so much pain. It's been very frustrating lately.

Oh that would be frustrating Taunnie. I hope they figure out what's causing the pain before they do any cutting. I had my appendix removed laprascopically. Very little scaring. Any abdominal surgery takes time for you to get your strength completely back, according to my surgeon, but the surgery itself was a breeze. That's coming from someone that used to tell her hubby if they every have to do surgery on me, don't tell me. Just knock me out and do it. I was that afraid. I don't have that ...»
kind of fear anymore. Just make sure to follow your doctors instructions to rest AND how and when to get back to regular activity. It will make all the difference in the world.

I'll continue to pray for you and your docs.

That's good. Nothing like being scared. I was so sick by the time hubby rushed me to the hospital, I had thought I had the flu but the pain was so bad by the forth day I couldn't take it anymore, so I really didn't care what they did by that time as long as they made the pain stop. Come to find out my appendix had ruptured and was leaking "poison" throughout my abdomen. Not good. So I know the kind of pain you must be suffering from. I hope you get relief SOON!

Hi Taunnie, I'm new to your blog. I love your countertop treatment. I have done some also. One of my favorites was a bathroom counter in a very light color pallet. We used an off white base coat & then sponged on several colors of pale beige and creams then oil base poly. The only thing you have to watch on the light colors is oil base poly tends to yellow. If you use a lot of whites it ends up turning colors. ...»

I hope you have had your gall bladder out by now. If they are still debating about the tests make sure they give you a test called a hydascan. Not sure about the spelling but that's how it sounds. My daughter's other tests said it wasn't gall bladder, but this test checks the function of the gall bladder & it showed that even though the other tests were negative, it showed that hers wasn't working well. They removed it & she's been doing great. Hope you get it taken care of.

Thanks for the awesome ideas you have.

Hi Linda! Thanks and I would love to see your countertops. The pallet sounds dreamy. I was thinking about using a oil based poly. After what you said, I think I may stick with a wipe on poly or maybe a epoxy when I redo the counters in my bathroom. Yes, I had the Hida scan. It showed my gallbladder wasn't working. I had a 95% ejection fraction. My surgen said I had a "hair trigger" gallbladder LOL. Anyway, I had it removed just before Christmas and I am feeling like a whole new person!

So glad to hear you're feeling better. It's amazing how such a tiny part of our bodies can cause so much trouble.

Keep up all the great work!!

It is so amazing that athough I felt like I was on death's doorstep, all the doctors said there was nothing wrong with me. The only thing that convinced them to operate was the HIDA scan. Thank goodness for modern technology! Anyway, it is good to hear from you. I haven't got around to any new projects yet but I do try to get on Hometalk everyday just to say hi :) Glad to hear you are doing well. I was kinda scared my system might be messed up after the surgery but it sounds like you are doing well so I have hope.
