Cubby Turned Shoe Organizer With Chalk Paint

With three kids and five people in the house, the shoe pile was out of control! We tried keeping it better and using a hanging shoe organizer, but it just wasn't working. I decided to turn a cubby from a school auction into a shoe organizer.
The cubby had been painted many, many times and had thick globs of paint on it. I sanded it down so I had a smooth surface.
Then I painted the edges with brown paint because I wanted to distress it. Even if the paint all sanded off, the wood was too light for distressing. I also put a thin coat of Vaseline over the paint so it would sand off easier.
Then I made some chalk paint and applied two coats and let it dry overnight. The next day, I used Minwax finishing paste to seal it.

I included the chalk paint recipe in my post.
