this is stunning! I'm curious about the 'live' bamboo. Will it live throught the winter? And also, the Japanese Maple. Will that also live through the winter? Will they have to be brought in? although they're probaby too large already this year to do so. Please tell me they will survive.

Marg, the planters are all insulated and have made it through a Winter already. Everything gets a burlap wrap mostly for protection from the wind.

We insulate with foam board and spray insulation. It works great and is easy to install.

thanks! I'm very interested in planting some bamboo and I know it will survive in my yard but I was curious about containers. My daughter and I both are planting Bamboo next year. She's using it for a privacy fence. We went to the Bronx Zoo last year and were amazed by all of the Bamboo they have there. We had no idea it survived in NY. thanks again.

Marg - a word to the wise . . .You might want to do some serious in-depth research on bamboo before rushing to plant it. There may be different kinds of bamboo so you could probably find info from local nurseries - NOT the big box guys. It is my understanding that bamboo is extremely invasive and almost impossible to get rid of. One suggestion I've seen is to have a cinderblock trench dug a couple of feet deep. This keeps it contained and from spreading runners out from the roots. I would look into it first.

@Marg - again . . . of course if you put it in large containers like theirs you'll be ok! LOL

Marg, Susan is spot on with her remarks. Be carefull on what cultivars you choose. It can cut right through asphalt and other hard materials.

Yes, please avoid any "running" bamboo, and even the clumping types you will have to keep an eye on. It's one thing in a handsome container, it's another altogether unrestrained.

I've heard the nightmares but had no idea that there are different cultivars to be 'feared'....I will most definitely do my research and dig trenches and such. Thank you all for the warning :) it's very appreciated.

Marg - I'd sure hate to pick up a newspaper one of these days and see a headline something to the effect of NY WOMAN'S HOME OVERTAKEN BY WILD BAMBOO! HAS NOT BEEN SEEN FOR MONTHS! LOL
