Can I over winter this Variegated Ginger inside?

Does it got dormant? If so, can I store it in the garage? Our temps are already dipping below freezing

  • I believe you store them as you would dahlia, elephant ears and such by digging up the tubers and shaking them free of dirt and putting them in a paper bag or a box with peat moss in acool dry area (garage). If you have a bright enough window you can try to grow it inside. but if it starts to die on you then I would take it out of the pot and store it.

Your plant is actually a stromanthe, in the same family as prayer plants. I think it will do better if you try to keep it as a houseplant over the winter. Try for a spot with bright light, and set it on a saucer filled with pebbles that you keep water in to increase the humidity. See: http://wimastergardener.org/?q=StromantheTricolor
