Stenciling a Rustic-Chic Picture Frame

Today was our first Hometalk Team project day! You all inspire us SO much everyday that we have a bajillion projects clipped and lingering in our dreams. We finally decided to join in on the fun and see if we could hold a candle to you crafting gurus!
We all chose a project that inspired us. When selecting mine, I kept in mind that my goal this year is to make all of my Christmas gifts. I decided to pick a project for the #1 lady in my life, my Mom.
The project the inspired me was The Golden Sycamore's stenciled picture frame post, "A Picture Frame That's Sure to Wow Mom!" (how perfect!) http://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/rooms/a-picture-frame-that-s-sure-to-wow-mom-3617103
With my inspiration ready, Miriam, Jill and I threw on our coats and trotted down 6th Ave to Michaels- aka crafting heaven. I knew I wanted to go rustic-chic for my Mom's frame since it's her and I's favorite design aesthetic.
I picked up a bottle of Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Acrylic Craft Paint in Pearl. I also snagged a PLAID Stencil 1 brush.
I love this floral stencil I found. I thought it would give that chic, feminine touch I was looking for against the wood.
This frame immediately caught my eye- such a lovely blank canvas.
I saw these stickers and instantly thought of my Mom. She has a shirt with the exact same western lettering.
I started by putting the letters on first. I wanted to make sure they were exactly where they'd be so I could stencil accordingly.
I winged it and placed the stencil where I thought it naturally looked best.
After my first application, the paint was a little bubbly. (I had no idea if that mattered at all.) They eventually popped and dried flat. :)
The brush was really dense so I used a dabbing technique on top of the stencil.
Added another on the other side.
Then some more. I'm so happy I went with the floral stencil!
It dried the beautiful, pearly color I was hoping for (with my favorite boots making an appearance.)

I feel like I should put a disclaimer on my Mom's gift "Merry Christmas Mom! NO this is not a picture of the lakefront log cabin I bought you!" haha
Actually, before I give it to her I will be putting a black & white picture of her, my big brother and myself at his wedding.

I hope she likes it :) Also, thank goodness Michael's had a fabulous craft room!

What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your feedback! AND...what should my next project be?! Something for the #1 guy in my life, my big brother :) Thanks so much for reading!
