Attracting Backyard Birds

My backyard has been filled with birds for the last week. I think they're in a feeding frenzy as they prepare to migrate so I keep my feeder full. If you want to attract birds, I have LOTS of hints (most are aimed toward Southern gardeners)....plus three feeders that keep squirrels at bay!

Very true, Tom, and it doesn't even take a lot. Here's a shot from the little fountain in my backyard when the robins came through this spring.

I live in California, the high desert to be exact and this time of year is so busy. We have migrating birds from daybreak until dusk. I have five hummingbirds feeders, two regular seed feeders and a finch feeder full everyday. The favorite spot is the water fountain!

Well I think that my flush of activity is over....the "extra's" seem to be gone, but my regulars are still here...kind of worries me that they didn't leave with the others....

Douglas, what's in the bird bath to turn it into a fountain? I made one very similar but can make another if I need to in order to have a pump hose in it...can you give me a Picure of how it's put together?

I feed the birds (and squirrels) in the fall/winter. We call it CAT TV around here.

    Sharron that's so pretty!

Becky J. That's why I told my hubby we need to feed the birds. To entertain the kitties. We have four inside cats. "Outside" to them in the screened in porch.

Wow Sharron, nice work!! So, how long have you been doing pottery? I've always thought that might be a fun hobby. Did you take it up as a hobby, then begin teaching it, or did you take courses to teach it?

@Sharron: There is just a simple pump, which I covered with river rocks, in the bottom of the bowl. I bought mine at my local nursery and they were great. We put water in the bottom of the bowl and tried out a couple of pumps for water height. The only real issue you will have is the cord. Mine had a hole at the back (you can see it right at the water line in the pix), which they fed the cord through and then filled with epoxy. If you use the birdbath you made, the cord would just have to ...»
go over the side. But, since you are such a talented potter, you could make your own incorporating a hole. There's a fair amount of splash from the fountain, so wider is better for the bowl.

@Douglas, Thanks! That's what I'll Do, I'll make another one with the hole for the cord...Scale is hard to tell in the picture but it's about 17" in Diameter and 4" deep....I may make the next one deeper as well to accomodate the fountain affect...but I had someone that wanted this one and since the "boys" got rid of both mine this spring I decided to keep it....since I had a simple plant saucer serving as my bird bath.... ...»

    @ "the Beckys'

I teach at the community center and if the teacher is out of pocket for some reason I have been known to fill in at the senior center...although they do simple ceramics rather than pottery. I've been doing this for about 8-9 years, although since my employment career encompassed environmental engineering, the chemical compounds utilized in the glazes were easier for me to comprehend than they would be if I hadn't had that background. BUT I also did ceramics while I was still in high school and ultimately selected majors in Art, Math and Science...Mostly because I wasn't quite sue what the heck I wanted to do...LOL I did go and take some additional art classes at various schools after that but it was "hobby" art for me until the last 8-9 years.

Walter, did you have to use a special type of camera to get this great shot of the cardinal?

looked camera up, interesting. My cat and I were outside at lunch and she was hunkered down under the bird feeder when 2 cardinals tried braving the feeder. (Don't worry, she isn't allowed to touch, just look.)

Thanks so much for sharing your information on attracting birds. I have several types of birds at my feeders, but this year we installed a bluebird house and I am anxiously watching to see if we are successful. I have read that they begin looking for their nesting places in February here in Northeast Alabama.
