Preparing Your Garden for Winter

Preparing my garden for the winter months is a task that I actually look forward to each year. It’s an opportunity for me to reflect upon the abundance of the harvest season, and yet also a chance to rest and renew my enthusiasm for next year’s garden (bigger and better!).
As I put the garden to bed, I like to remember the FIVE C’s of preparing for winter:
Compost, Cover, Collect, Create, and Celebrate.
Covering your garden with straw or another form of mulch protects bare soil from erosion and makes spring planting quick and easy.
I like to create new sheet mulched garden beds in the fall as I'm composting the summer's spent plants. I simply lay down cardboard, and then add layers of straw, manure, food scraps, and any plant materials I'd like to compost.

Awe, I hate this time of year and the pulling up of all the dead plants......I haven't even made it in my garden yet to get it done! I used hay in my garden this year with feed sacks or cardboard underneath. It saved my life from weeds. I was gone a week here and there. My garden would have been overtaken had it not been covered with these products.
