Abstract Painting Anyone Can Do

Paintiing on canvas. So simple. Use Modern Masters Iron Oxide Paint and Rusting Activator. Coat a canvas in acid blocking primer. Paint your accent color stripes (I chose turquoise) with Acrylic Paint. Paint two coats of iron oxide paint, leaving your accent color exposed as desired, waiting 30 minutes between coats. After your 2nd coat dries for an hour, spray on the rust activator (do this outside to avoid rust drips on your floor) and let sit for 5 minutes. Spray a 2nd coat and let the activator do its stuff for about 3 hours. The only actual painting done was the turquoise.

Wow Leslie! That's absolutely beautiful! Where did you find the iron paint and activator?

Leslie - How interesting!! Sure takes "art" to a different level. A combination of contemporary and rustic at the same time!! Are these specific products - the Iron Oxide, rusting activator and acid blocking primer readily found in most of the usual craft places??

I know this might sound strange, but in the picture of only the first coat of activator sprayed on, I swear it reminds me of the old southwest turquoise gemstones....

Thanks, all. It's a product by Modern Masters. www.modernmasters.com . The iron oxide paint and rusting activator were about $30. We bought it to rust some black metal stars and wheels/hardware on an industrial cart table. The pint size was enough to do this canvas and all the metal pieces, with some left over The website has a video where they did a wall and it looked so cool, that I thought I would try a painting.

The website will also give you any local suppliers who carry their products, but it was actually less expensive to order online for us.
