Deep bathtub stains

Me
by Me
I had taken A bath the other day and after I sprayed some Scrubbing Bubbles in the tub.. I walked away for approximately 7 minutes when I came back this is what I saw..mind you when I got in and when I got out the tub was not stained whatsoever.I dId notice every time I did clean the tub in the past there was a slight gray color coming through the areas that are now stained as yellow . I feel that the undercoating of the tub was coming through the porcelain and with the over exposure of the chemicals in the cleanser its stained through . Any suggestions I have tried vinegar and baking soda and I also have tried filling the tub with bleach water and letting it soak nothing has helped thus far

The only thing I can suggest is Mr. Clean Magic Sponges. I have been successful getting some pretty nasty dirt, soap scum and well water stains out of porcelain and fiberglass tubs with them. Perhaps it will work for you.

If none of those fixes help, there are companies that come in and spray over your existing tub to re-coat it. You can even change from it's original color. A lot easier than ripping out your present tub. Good luck!

Try Dawn liquid (Blue) along with Mr. Clean Magic sponges...don't dilute.

Not sure what to tell you if you believe it is bleeding thru but what I discovered accidently recently is that Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner (A Liquid in a curved neck bottle made specially for the inner toilet rims) is some powerful cleaner! If you can tackle the hard part which is opening the darn bottle just squeeze it all around the top edge and let it run down your tub. . add more as needed . . scrub it around to evenly coat your tub and later you will barely need to scrub any more. . just rinse it away.

Thanks Kay but I noticed the markings long ago. Seeing them barely helps much . . . but it does somewhat. Lets you know where to press in at; while pressing down . . . AND turning at the same time. . . difficult. Hopefully it does its job well of keeping kids from contact with it.

During illness had to find a housekeeper to clean bath and kitchen thoroughly. Commode cleaner was her deep cleaner of choice and it worked using it only monthly. Highly acidic . Rinse WELL if a bath in the tub is ever used while using bowl cleaner to clean it even days later. Between cleanings use vinegar and water to neutralize.
  • What kind of tub is it? Is it cast iron, steel, or fiberglass? Porcelain will not do this. Fiberglass will. If the coating called Gell coat has worn though, you are starting to see the body of the tub itself. If this is the case, no amount of cleaning will change this. You will need to get the tub resurfaced. However the cost of doing so is outweighed by simply replacing the tub or having a company come in and install a new insert. Bath Fitters is a company that provides this service.

Have you tried filling it with water and adding a couple of cups of white vinegar, soaking it for a couple of hours or even overnight? You will still have to scrub but it loosens the deposits enough to get them off. I have this problem too - the bathroom cleaner makes streaks, and the only thing that works is vinegar. This will not harm your tub.

try backing soda in a dry tub and scrub with a lemon
  • Looking closer at the photo, I am wondering if the tub has been painted before. The gloss on the top edges appear to be a dull shiny look, which is typical of a painted project. If this is the case, a few different things may have occurred. A reaction with the paint to the chemicals you used, or the pattern suggests that perhaps some fine cracking in the finish occurred and the stains are in between them, Or the tub was yellow at one time? Just thinking outside of the box. Need more information about the tub.

Could be rust that's in the water

Is it fibre glass or porcelain. If it’s porcelain like a cast iron tub and the shiny finish is worn off you can use a paste made of grated bar soap mixed with water. I grated about 10 bars of ivory into a bucket. Put enough water to cover when I pushed the floating soap shreds down. Let it soak 24 hours and added more water as it it soaked the water up. By morning it was thick like frosting. I frosted my tub with it and let it sit over night. Scraped it off with a spatula in the morning and my tub was completely white. No rust stains or anything.

    Hello Me,

Yes, it looks as if you have taken off the bath finish! Best have it re-finished or change up your bath for a New or re-conditioned one. Good luck!

  • CLR or Limeway, or a acid toilet cleaner if it's porcelain, but READ THE DIRECTIONS FIRST. If it's old and worn you may need to replace it.
