  • Hello Rachel, I am kinda in a similar situation, I think what you need is a landscape designer to help you draw up a plan and work with you on plant selection. I have seen some very good local landscapers here on Hometalk giving very good advice. Here is a link so of all the landscapers, also read their advice and comments to other hometalk members as well. I am in a similar situation and got very good advice from a local nursery and local landscapers. For now I have pushed the project due to overload of family activities, but I've loved all their ideas and even plan on visting on of the local nurseries soon. http://www.hometalk.com/feeds?industry%5B%5D=49&search=contractor See the discussion on my garden beds as well. - http://www.hometalk.com/activity/56756

Rachel, as Yamini says, I think investing in a professional design for such a prominent area of your house would be well worth the money, but here are a few thoughts. The English style for a house of this type would tend to be fairly formal, so I would recommend edging that entrance with neat, low-growing plants. You needn't do clipped boxwood, but it should have a similar effect. That Japanese maple looks quite close to the house. I would move it out to the center of the area. There should be some more pyramidal dwarf conifers as well.
